Orthodontic Appliances in Arvada
When braces aren’t enough to correct your child’s orthodontic issues, our orthodontist may recommend appliances. Orthodontic appliances can be used alongside braces to help your child achieve healthy teeth and jaw alignment. At West Arvada Orthodontics, we are proud to offer a variety of orthodontic appliances and treatments to ensure a lifetime of straight, beautiful smiles.
Orthodontic appliances can be fixed or removable depending on your child’s age and individual needs. There are many types of orthodontic appliances designed to correct specific conditions. Dr. Friedman will perform a thorough exam to determine the appliance that’s right for your child.
Orthodontic appliances are used to correct one of the following issues:
- Your child’s teeth (bite) fail to meet naturally due to misaligned jaws, such as overbite or underbite
- Your child’s teeth are crowded due to irregular tooth or jaw development
The types of appliances we offer include:
Palatal Expanders
Palatal expanders are used to widen the upper jaw to create space for your child’s permanent teeth.
The expanders can also be used to create room to improve your child’s breathing and treat mouth breathing. These devices can be removable or fixed. Dr. Friedman will recommend the kind of appliance that’s appropriate for your child’s unique needs.
Twin Blocks
Twin blocks are commonly used to correct overbites. An overbite occurs when your child’s lower jaw is positioned too far behind the top jaw for the teeth to meet naturally. These devices work to reposition your child’s jaw and help the lower jaw develop normally.
Facemasks
Also known as reverse headgears, facemasks are used to correct underbites. An underbite occurs when your child’s upper jaw is positioned too far behind the lower jaw, and the teeth can’t meet naturally, making the lower teeth look more prominent. These devices consist of a wire frame that rests gently on your child’s forehead and chin and will help correct your child’s upper jaw development. The facemask is removable but must be worn 12 to 20 hours a day depending on your child’s case.
